Sometimes a small shotgun house looking shed was used to put away small tools. Much like the others, this one is for the home while the others where for the workers.

This scene was a constant. It reminds me a lot of my father and the men who were sharecroppers on the farm that I grew up on. Though tractors had replaced the wagons, I can feel the work ethic it must have taken to house, clothe, and feed their families.

This one is reminiscent of my hometown of Belcher, Louisiana. After talking to my mentor, collector, and friend Henry Price, I tried something a little different application with this one. Fun, but challenging as I try other techniques - always wanting to grow artistically.

Shotgun houses are part of the culture of North Louisiana. Being raised in this area on a cotton plantation has given me a perspective not known by many. My goal is not let these stories fade away without artistic interpretation.

In my early years as a young boy in North Louisiana, I saw this signs of the division as it related to race. I do these pieces to make sure we never take for granted the growth thus far, though there is more to do. My art will make sure this history never dies on the vine. We are stronger…TOGETHER.

Belcher, Louisiana was a very small community, and everyone was like family. My siblings and I went to school with the Armstrong children. My mom even drove us all to school on the bus. Our dads were farmers too. Those were the days.

This piece is a continuation of “small rural series” featuring barns. These barns were a part on the farm life you’d see all over the country. Farming continues to be the backbone of rural America.

I truly love these structures. Rural north Louisiana still has many of these homes standing. I hope that we always remember the “life lessons” of the families that called the shotgun house “home”. It truly is where the heart is.
